Tax Due DatesThe IRS Form 1040 for year 2010 needs to be postmarked no later than April 18, 2011. Your tax return doesn't need to be received by April 18, 2011, only postmarked by that date. If you plan to file an extension for your 1040 tax return it will also need to be postmarked by April 18, 2010. If you are filing an extension, be sure that if a payment is owed it is included with the extension Form 4868 you file. Additionally, if you file an extension on your 1040, the due date on your tax return will be October 17, 2011. Again, the Form 1040 just needs to be postmarked by October 17, 2011 when filing an extended return. Make sure to calculate an accurate estimate on the tax that will be owed, as interest and penalties could be applied. Further, if you are living outside of the country or in Puerto Rico you can get an automatic 2 month extension on your 1040 tax return. You have to be able to prove that the location is your primary place of business or post of duty. Also, you can qualify for a longer extension on your 1040 if you are living outside of the country, usually exceeding the 6 month requirement. For taxpayers filing Married but Separate, the extension will only apply to the spouse who actually qualifies for it. This does not apply if you are filing Married jointly. When filing your return electronically, the date you submit your return online is your recorded filing date. For example, if your return is due on April 17 then you can file online that day and it will be considered accepted.
