As we move through life, we encounter all kinds of problems. Some of these challenges can be overcome on our own, but others require the help of professionals. When it came time to choose a career, I had one overarching goal – to be able to solve problems for others and use my knowledge and experience to help others find clarity in any obstacles they encountered. Being an estate planning attorney gave me exactly this opportunity, and after more than 30 years, I’ve never looked back!
My career journey
After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Wright State University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Dayton School of Law, I earned an LLM in Estate Planning and Elder Law from Western New England. University Law School, I became the first attorney in Ohio to do so! I was also one of the first attorneys to achieve board certification by the Ohio Bar Association in estate planning, trust, and probate law.
In 1992, I founded Gudorf Law Group, LLC, a small law firm that helps families and businesses prepare for the future. An important part of this preparation involves estate planning. When people ask me why I chose to major in estate planning over other areas of practice, my answer is simple: I think planning is a loving business. When someone makes a decision to take care of the details and make a plan of action for his wife, children, and future generations, it shows the level of care and love he has for his family.
But in order to plan in the right way, people need a plan tailored to their unique needs and circumstances. As a counseling-oriented attorney, I take the time to listen to my clients’ concerns and develop a deep understanding of their situation so that I can provide them with appropriate guidance and solutions. My process and relationship-centric approach helps my clients clarify their goals and put them on the right path to reach their desired outcome.
Why do I love what I do
My passion for my work and my role in the lives of my clients go back to why I started this profession in the first place – to help others solve their problems. This is why my favorite part of what I do is the privilege of working closely with my clients and pointing them in the right direction. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing someone take your advice, follow them, and then walk into their future with confidence, knowing that their possessions are not only for the rest of their life, but for their family as well.
